Community education courses: the cheapest teacher-led option

Many high schools run evening classes for adults, and Spanish is one of the regulars. They run a term at a time, one night a week, in a classroom after the students have gone home. Papanui High School in Christchurch lists its beginners course at $146 for seven two-hour Tuesday evenings, and Selwyn Community Education in Auckland lists Level 1 Beginners at $150 for eight classes, with a shorter Spanish for Travellers course at $115. That makes them the cheapest way to get a real teacher in front of you, at roughly $10 to $15 an hour.

The trade-off is that you fit around the course. If you miss the start of term you wait for the next one, and if you miss a week the class carries on without you. The pace is set by the middle of the room, and with a dozen or more learners you get only a few minutes of speaking each night.

Language-school group courses: structure and a level ladder

Private language schools run the same eight-week format with a clearer progression from one level to the next. The Spanish Institute charges $180 for eight 90-minute classes of around ten students, Latin Rhythm $170–180 for eight 90-minute weekly classes in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington and online, and Wellington Spanish Hub from $250 for an eight-week course with materials included. Per hour that is about $15 to $25, still cheap, and you can usually step straight into the next level the following term.

If you like learning alongside other people and can commit to the same night every week, a group course is good value. If your week moves around, or you freeze when asked to speak in front of a room, it can be money spent on sitting and listening.

Private Spanish tutors: what one-to-one costs

A private lesson at a language school costs more per hour, and The Spanish Institute lists $55 an hour for one to three students. Independent tutors on marketplaces set their own rates, so prices range widely with experience and whether the tutor travels to you. What you pay for is attention: the whole hour is built around your level and your goal, and you do most of the talking.

With us a 10-lesson pack is $400 online ($40 a lesson) or $450 in person in Auckland or Wellington ($45 a lesson). You start with a $25 trial, there is no term to wait for, and unused lessons are refundable within six months. The full breakdown is on our pricing page.

Apps and free options

Apps are free or close to it and are good for vocabulary and a daily habit. Public libraries also lend Spanish books and audio courses for free. What none of them do is listen to you speak and tell you what to fix, which is why many people who start on an app eventually add a class or a tutor. If that is you, our beginners lessons pick up from wherever the app left you.

Which option gives the best value?

  • Cheapest per hour: a community education course, if the night and start date suit you.
  • Best for a steady routine with others: a language-school group course, one level at a time.
  • Best for speaking quickly, a trip, an exam or a busy week: a one-to-one tutor, in person or online.
  • Best for children and NCEA: one-to-one, so the lessons follow the school programme. See NCEA Spanish tutoring.

Not sure which level you are? The free level test takes two minutes and tells you whether you need a beginners course or something further up.

Spanish lesson cost questions

How much are Spanish lessons in NZ?

It depends on the format. In October 2026, community education evening courses were $146–150 for seven or eight weeks, language-school group courses $170–250 for eight weeks, and a private lesson at The Spanish Institute $55 an hour. With us, a trial lesson is $25 and a 10-lesson pack works out at $40 a lesson online or $45 in person. See our prices.

What is the cheapest way to learn Spanish in NZ?

Per hour, a community education course run by a local high school is usually the cheapest teacher-led option, because the school subsidises the room. The catch is pace and timing: one class a week, a set night, a term start date, and fifteen-odd classmates sharing the teacher's attention. Free apps and library resources cost nothing but rarely get you speaking.

Is a private Spanish tutor worth the extra cost?

If your goal is speaking, usually yes. In a group class of ten, each person talks for a few minutes a session; in a one-to-one lesson you talk for most of the hour. Many learners do both: a cheap group course for structure, and a handful of private lessons to practise speaking and fix the things the class moves past.

Do Spanish lessons include GST?

Check each provider. Some schools quote GST-inclusive prices and some don't say. We're not registered for GST, so our price is the price you pay.

Are online Spanish lessons cheaper?

Often a little. Ours are $40 a lesson online against $45 in person, because the tutor isn't travelling. Several NZ schools also run their group courses online at the same price as in the room.
