Who are intermediate and advanced Spanish lessons for?

People who can already hold a basic conversation and want to sound natural, learners who finished every group course on offer near them, and anyone preparing for a DELE exam, a move or a job in Spanish. Group courses in New Zealand thin out sharply above intermediate, which is where a tutor earns their fee.

  • Learners at B1 who have plateaued
  • People who have run out of group courses to take
  • Anyone preparing for a move, a job or a DELE exam
  • Heritage speakers who understand but rarely speak

What do you work on in advanced Spanish lessons?

Mostly speaking and listening at a natural pace, with grammar where it holds you back: the subjunctive, choosing between past tenses, and the connectors that make speech sound fluent. Your tutor brings in news, podcasts, series and books at your level and uses them as the start of a conversation rather than a comprehension exercise.

The grammar that holds you back

The subjunctive, preterite against imperfect, ser and estar, and por and para: the points that separate intermediate from fluent.

Real material

News, podcasts, series and books at your level, chosen with you and used as the start of a conversation.

Sounding natural

Connectors, idioms and the shortcuts native speakers use, so you stop translating in your head.

Which Spanish levels do you teach?

We teach 4 levels, A1 to B2: from introducing yourself and ordering food at A1 up to holding a real conversation with native speakers at B2. Your tutor confirms where you are in your first lesson and tells you what comes next.

  1. A1Order a coffee, say who you are, ask for directions
  2. A2Get around on holiday, talk about your week
  3. B1Chat with your partner's family, follow a slow podcast
  4. B2Hold a real conversation, work in Spanish

Questions about intermediate & advanced

How do I know if I'm intermediate?

If you can talk about your past and your plans in simple sentences, and follow a slow conversation, you are probably around B1. Our level test takes two minutes, and the levels page explains what each level means.

Can you help with the DELE exam?

Yes. The DELE is the Instituto Cervantes' official Spanish exam. Tell us the level you are sitting when you book and we match you with a tutor who prepares students for it, using past papers and timed practice.

I grew up hearing Spanish but never learned properly. Is this for me?

Very often, yes. Heritage speakers usually understand far more than they can say. Your tutor focuses on speaking, reading and writing so the Spanish you already have becomes usable.

Is online fine at advanced level?

Yes. At advanced level most of the lesson is conversation and shared material on screen, which works well online and costs $400 for 10 lessons rather than $450 in person.
